Gardening Is Good For The Soul
I know I went a bit MIA this week. I promised myself that I’d be kind to my reader brain and, since all I wanted to do was do a re-read of The Bear and the Nightingale, I haven’t had much inspiration to fuel any posts. Work was a bit hectic this week, and so today I woke up and promised myself that I’d go outside. The weather was beautiful, everything was green because of all the rain the past few days, and so I dragged myself outdoors and started to plant.
This is my second year of gardening, and so luckily I already had peat pods ready to go for my seedlings! I also learned my lesson last year that it’s never easy to determine how many seeds will actually germinate. I only planted one pepper plant seed, and it flourished. I planted 9 tomato seeds and only 4 lived. Hahaha. So this year I over planted everything! Worst case scenario, I’ll have little plants to share with my friends.
Some of my plants from last year, like these calendula flowers, made it through the whole “winter” here! So I cut off dead pieces, mulched them, and gave them a bit of overall love. I love to see so much color in an otherwise gray set of weeks.
My cherry tomato plants from last year not only survived the whole entire year, but promptly flowered after the rain ended. So it looks like these little guys are pretty darn hardy, and I’ll end up with many more delicious orbs of tomato this year. I am a happy gardener!
Reading is one way I unplug, and so is television at times, but I think my favorite way to really let it all go is to be out in the garden. It’s green, it smells like wet earth, and all around me I can hear the birds and the rustling of trees. It’s like a little oasis in the middle of the madness.
Gardening is good for the soul.
Back to your regularly scheduled bookish programming starting on Monday :). For now, go find something you love to do, and just unplug!
