The Flirt Alert is a scorching, standalone, billionaire, enemies to lovers, best friend’s brother, forced proximity, STEM workplace, HEA romance.
Who doesn’t love a good enemies to lovers romance? I’ll admit it’s one of my favorite genres. I think the passion that fuels a grudge is a fun catalyst to some extra naughty encounters. This particular story did not disappoint on the naughty encounters, that is for certain.
I really enjoyed Shay’s journey from rebellious teenager, to codependent adult, and eventually to her finding her own way. The author did a wonderful job of creating a specific type of atmosphere with the overbearing parents, misguided brother, and an adult Shay moving home after a breakup. It was the perfect catalyst for some real growth and learning for everyone. Being a medically complex individual requires vigilance and ultimately a lot of trust from a partner and Shay needed someone who could learn to see her for what she’s capable of instead of holding her back.
Austin was admittedly a bit of a an @$$ at the beginning of the story. Obviously holding a grudge from high school seemed petty at best, and using his position at work to belittle an old crush was not very becoming at all. As we learn more of the details of what actually happened back then, and how it affected his self esteem and shaped the man he is today, my stance changed. I wish we got a little more details on his family situation as it gets resolved. While it’s a background story it would have been nice to have more information than a quick “this is something stressing him out” but I digress.
The chemistry between Shay and Austin is definitely hot hot hot. It was also nice to have some inner dialogue with a bit of emotional maturity in it. Acknowledging their baggage and trusting each other to ask for what they need was a nice change of pace. Although the “let’s reconnect” to sexy time was faster than a speeding bullet I suppose I can let that critique go. Overall it was a lovely story with well thought out characters, emotional revelations, medically complex situations, and a heroine that wanted to stand on her own two feet.
I would definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy spicy romance and characters you learn to love. I look forward to more from this author.
