On Reading the Tough Stuff
I’m nearly through the end of We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson as I type this. It’s late at night, I’m in bed, and I can’t stop thinking about all the things that this book has wrapped up in it. Like most good books I’ve found lately, I stumbled upon this entirely by accident. The library had it available as an audiobook, it has excellent ratings on Goodreads, and the rest is history. As a young reader, I wasn’t really policed in what I read. My mom would give the synopsis on the back a cursory glance, but mostly…

On Peer Pressure Reading
Okay, so the sad face might be a little bit of an overstatement. I’m not saying that peer pressure reading is a bad thing, persay! I’ll explain below. I actually got the idea from this post from one of my Instagram friends, and it got me to thinking about my experience with this topic. So lend me your ears for a bit, and lets chat. *** When I first stumbled my way into the world of blogging, I was completely lost. There was so much to talk about, so much to write about, so many new books to read, and…

A Quiet Sunday
Greetings all! Yes, I know. It’s been pretty quiet in here. I stopped my book to take a break, and realized that I haven’t posted in here in quite a bit of time. Ever since I promised myself that I’d take it easy this year, it has been a lot easier to step away when I feel like blogging is too much to have on my plate. I, of course, wanted to get good at scheduling posts in advance for just such an occasion but… well… we’re going to keep working on that. Anyway, it’s a pretty quiet Sunday here…

Looking Forward & 2017 Reading Plans
You know what they say about the best laid plans… It’s officially the latter half of December, which means there are only a two more weeks standing between us, and 2017. I always take this time to reflect, to reassess and, my most favorite thing of all, think about what my reading is going to look like in the new year. I’ve been known to cackle delightedly over plots and plans regarding books. 2017 is going to be a lot different than 2016 was though, mostly because of what I’ve learned about myself this year. Which, to be completely honest,…

Happy December!
Is anyone else reeling over the fact that this is the last month of 2016? No, just me? It happens every year. December hits, and suddenly I’m remembering all the things I meant to do, but too caught up in the holiday season to really care whether or not I’ve accomplished them yet. Blogging slows down too, as you’ve probably noticed. It’s a mad rush to finish projects at work, spend time with visiting friends and family, and catch up on all those last minute books you meant to read before the whole new Spring 2017 catalog hits. Anyway I…

Thankful Thursday
In the madness that has been the last two weeks, I put everything to the wayside in favor of work. Which is dangerous, because if there one thing that I’ve learned it’s that I need a certain amount of self care. Ignoring that leads to anxiety, and depression. Those are roads I like to avoid if at all possible. I’m writing this post as a way to stop for a minute, and really think about these last two weeks. What I’ve been trying to do, mostly in my paper journal, is take some time once a week and write down…

Some Monday Musings, On Bookshelf Organization
I’ve been sitting in bed, for about the last hour, trying to figure out exactly what I want to say on this subject. It’s that age old dilemma that all bookworms face at one point or another. How do we organize our books? Do we do it for aesthetics, or for ease of locating desired reads? One of my favorite things ever in the bookstagram community is rainbow bookshelves. I pine for those white bookshelves, filled with rainbow organized books. They’re just so pretty! Every time I’ve tried to do that with mine though, I end up balking at the…

Puppy Love
So it’s apparently been quite a bit since I’ve actually had time to sit and write something here that wasn’t a review! You’d think, technically, that writing a review is harder than writing a rambling post. I’m here to say that’s not really the case. It cracks me up, but it’s the truth. You might be asking yourself, “Well where have you been Jessica?” and I wouldn’t blame you. The answer to that question is that little puppy right over there to the left. We have a new addition to the HDB family, and her name is Luna. To say…

On Bookshelves.
Ah, bookshelves. A bookworm’s pride, joy, and also ultimate nemesis. When we moved to our new house, one of the happiest moments for me was realizing that I actually had enough space for two large bookshelves. As a person who has lived in many an apartment, I’d gotten used to having a small amount of special books, getting rid of books often, and sometimes just making stacks. Hey, a bookworm can only part with so much of their horde. Book stacks are… furniture? Art? Necessary. Anyway, my husband dutifully put up my new shelves for me and I spent so…

Memorial Day Mini Read-A-Thon
Ah, the weekend is here and it’s a long one! While everyone else plans parties, barbeques, and get togethers, I’m planning on what I’m going to read this weekend while I relax at home. Seriously guys, this week ate my life. I got virtually nothing done that wasn’t work (as is evidenced by my lack of posts), and I’m exhausted. I’m looking forward to a weekend filled with wine, books, and lots of me time. Happily, all of my library reservations came in at the same time! So here’s what I plan on reading this weekend. The first book in…
